Penthouse Letters: In Deep(Penthouse)

Back in the day, the wife used to work at a little convenience store in our tiny town. During the rare moments of downtime, she says, she used to get an occasional porn fix by reading the latest edition of Penthouse Letters. That’s the thing about the wife’s attraction to porn – the story behind the fucking is much more alluring than the fucking sometimes. So, when it came time for us to review another DVD, Penthouse Letters: In Deep seemed like an obvious candidate. The film plays out in five parts, each a “dramatization” of a letter read at the top of each scene by Penthouse’s 2006 Pet of the Year, Jaime Lynn.

Penthouse Letters: In Deep takes you through a variety of erotic fantasies – a neighbor catching her friend’s husband in the shower, a newly appointed lawyer having an affair with his legal secretary, an exhibitionist couple who have sex by their friends’ pool, a sexy student seducing her sexy professor, and two cute diner employees getting it on after hours on the burger counter.

Though the fantasies are varied, the sex really isn’t. The first four scenes are basically the same thing in different contexts. Hetero, vanilla sex is pretty much the dominant theme throughout, save the lesbian scene at the end. Some of the shots come off as a little more softcore, but that’s not always a bad thing when you’re picking a DVD to watch with your lover. The hottest scene is probably the first, where Claire Robbins climbs in the shower with her best friend’s husband. The scene is slow, erotic and extremely passionate. The foreplay action between Claire and her forbidden lover is tension building and hot, and the running water just helps make things even steamier.

The slowness of the scenes (and when we say slow, we don’t mean boring) is the key to the erotic glamour of the movie. The lesbian scene at the end with Heather Vandeven and Justine Joli, for example, gets hot-and-heavy but still retains a degree of infatuation and passion.The slowness and the attention to foreplay made the scenes a bit more believable (especially the two we’ve mentioned) and when you’re looking for a porn flick to watch with your lover, this is exactly what you want. It’s like the wife says, Penthouse Letters: In Deep “wasn’t dirty, it was erotic.” Yeah, it’s OK to watch two people fucking each other like animals, screaming and panting through the whole scene. But if your goal is to watch a movie that’s going to get you and your lover hot and bothered, you probably want to aim for something a little more akin to the sex you’re going to have afterwards; sex that is a little more romantic, and a little less pornstar.

Although its title suggest bad picture quality, 'Low Fidelity' delivers...

I've always avoided films that say things like 'over 4 hours of action' or '3 hours of bliss' on the cover. Visions of badly edited sessions and unused cuts from a bunch of productions come to mind. So when the cover mentioned '2 hours' I normally would have turned away. However I recognized the girls on the cover from that naughty buffet we call the Internet, and decided why not? The names on the package were no strangers to the industry. It might be worthwhile, and sooner or later somebody needs to review these 2 hour plus type DVDs.

What seemed to promise a waste of film was actually decent quality. In fact, this turned out to be a collection of sessions from other films with all the dialogue cut out of the beginning of each scene. In most cases the scenes started directly into the sex. This would be perfect for people who tend to skip over the dialogue and go right for the dirty stuff. While the picture and sound quality was not the most immaculate, it was about average, and far better than the title might suggest. The scenes generate a fair amount of heat and there is plenty of uninterrupted footage for each one.

The Red Corset

When approaching porn from a couple’s perspective, there are generally three things the wife and I are looking for in a good fuck-flick:
1 – Scenes that interest both the male and female viewer
2 – A variety of scenes and shots (we’re not looking for two straight hours of blowjob footage, for example)
3 – An over-arching narrative that ties the whole movie together, and makes for both an interesting and exciting viewing experience.

Having said all that, The Red Corset passed our test.

Imagine a hot, blood-red corset that infuses anyone who puts it on with instant lust and you’ve basically imagined the storyline of the film. Originally owned by a Victorian-era queen, the corset has made its way through history via auctions, gift giving and lucky finds to land in the hands of a two curious sex therapists, a woman who has lost all interest in sex, and a pair of horny friends, among others.

Composed of mainly straight male & female sex, the film appealed to both the wife and I. By far the best scene in the movie is the second, in which the sexually disinterested Lauren Kain dons the infamous corset and has hot & heavy sex with her male lover on a glamorous staircase. Good shots & interesting positions coupled with the fact that Kain probably fills out the corset the best led the wife and I to agree that this scene was the most erotic for both of us.

We also both enjoyed the amount of screen time given to the most important art of cunnilingus in several scenes – specifically the ones performed by males (i.e. not the ones in the lesbian or the threesome scene) – because a) we’re both big fans, and b) too often porn seems to be only about getting the guy off. The attention to males giving head to females in this movie was nice to see, and a turn on for us both.

Overall, The Red Corset was pretty straightforward. As the wife said, “It’s simple enough that if this was the first porno someone watched, they wouldn’t be turned off.” The film sticks to all the standards – blowjobs, missionary positions, doggystyle, a lesbian scene, a threesome scene, etc – and doesn’t plant any kinks (unless you count the corset as a kink) or try to push any fetish boundaries. We both enjoyed watching it, and we would recommend it to any couple looking for an erotic film to incorporate into a spicy evening.
